The @YourSideColleague® First Nations Cardiac Care Course
The @YourSide Colleague® First Nations Cardiac Care Course will provide health care providers in First Nations communities with a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular disease, including risk factors, chronic disease prevention, diagnostic tests, management and treatment options and self-management. After taking this course, learners will be able to promote cardiovascular health and deliver evidence based culturally sensitive care related to cardiovascular disease.
Topics
Module 1: Introduction to Cardiovascular Disease
Completing this topic will enable the learner to:
- Define five types of cardiovascular disease.
- Identify various structures within the heart.
- Distinguish basic functions of the heart.
Module 2: The Cardiac Assessment
Completing this topic will enable the learner to:
- Identify the specific components of a cardiovascular health assessment.
- Recognize and know the appropriate response to signs and symptoms commonly associated with a cardiac condition.
Module 3- Prevention
Completing this topic will enable the learner to:
- Identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
- Identify how to educate clients on healthy lifestyle choices.
Module 4: Cardiovascular Disease Diagnosis and Conditions
Completing this topic will enable the learner to:
- Identify various cardiovascular diseases and the signs and symptoms associated with each condition.
- Identify the management and/or treatment options for the various cardiovascular diseases.
- Recollect factors and tests that influence how a cardiac diagnosis is made.
Module 5: Cardiovascular Disease Management
Completing this topic will enable the learner to:
- Identify medications used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and recognize possible side effects.
- Understand and support a Chronic Disease Prevention and Management approach across the lifespan
- Understand how to educate clients on wholistic strategies (Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual) on staying well with cardiovascular disease
