Indigenous Healthcare Policy and Procedure Development Program


Course Description

Learners will learn to create policies and procedures rooted in strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally relevant approaches. The program aligns with accreditation requirements but is applicable to learners working within accredited and non-accredited organizations.  The program guides participants through developing and implementing healthcare policies and procedures within Indigenous communities and organizations. The course is divided into four 2-hour sessions, where participants will learn about and actively craft their policies and procedures, guided by the policy and procedure life cycle. Interactive tools will be used to enhance engagement and collaboration among participants.

  • Accreditation Coordinators / Quality Improvement Leads
  • Community Health Representatives

Course Instructors

  • Highly experienced facilitators with knowledge of Indigenous healthcare policy and procedure development, cultural relevance, trauma-informed care, and accreditation standards will lead the workshop.

Program Objectives

Upon program completion, learners will have gained knowledge related to:

  1. Navigating the policy and procedure life cycle, from identifying a need to retirement.
  2. Drafting, implementing, and monitoring a policy or procedure for an identified need.
  3. Understand the factors that are crucial components of an effective policy and procedure and describe how these factors affect the process of writing your policy and procedure.
  4. Strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally relevant approaches while developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  5. The importance of regularly reviewing and updating policies and procedures to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.

Session 1: Policy and Procedure Introduction

Objectives:

  1. Introduce the learners to the key concepts of Policy and Procedure Development to gain fundamental knowledge of Indigenous Healthcare Policy and Procedure Development. Define:
    • What are policies and procedures, and how do we understand their importance?
    • What the term “stakeholder” or, as we will refer to in this course, “contributors” means?

2. Present the three factors that are crucial components of an effective policy and procedure and describe how these factors affect the process of writing your policy and procedure.

    • Relance and Cultural Safety
    • Alignment with regulatory and legal requirements
    • Alignment with accreditation standards

3. Provide an overview of drafting a policy and procedure outline for an identified need.

 


Session 2: Crafting a Policy or Procedure

Objectives:

  1. Describe the stages of policy development, including defining the need, research, drafting, consultation, approval, and implementation.
  2. Learn how to engage contributors and community members in the policy and procedure development process.
  3. Common challenges in policy and procedure development through an Indigenous lens.
  4. Create a high-level draft policy or procedure.

 


Session 3: P&P Implementation: Communication and Training Plans

Objectives:

  1. Identify the importance of an implementation plan.
  2. Identify and explain the key stages involved in communicating and implementing an Indigenous health policy or procedure.
  3. Develop effective communication strategies and training plans to understand and follow policies and procedures.
  4. Learn culturally safe approaches to implementing a policy or procedure.
  5. Discuss common challenges in implementing policy and procedure and strategies to mitigate these challenges.
  6. Create a high-level draft of a communication and training plan.

 


Session 4: P&P Monitoring, Continuous Improvement and Reviewing

Objectives:

  1. Identify essential techniques for monitoring and evaluating Indigenous healthcare policy and procedures.
  2. Understand the concept of continual improvement and its application to policy and procedure development.
  3. Describe the importance of regularly reviewing and updating policies and procedures to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
  4. Wrap-up and course evaluations.
